When the term end-of-life doula is mentioned, I'm usually met with, “that’s a thing?”
Well, it most certainly is, and there is a growing number of compassionate doulas who specialize in helping individuals through this challenging phase of life.
Merilynne Rush, MSHP, RN, BSN, defines an end-of-life doula (EOLD) as "someone who provides non-medical, holistic support and comfort to the dying person and their family, which may include education and guidance, as well as emotional, spiritual, or practical care. EOLDs engage with clients from as early as initial diagnosis through after death care and bereavement. When caregivers are feeling overwhelmed, the doula helps them identify physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs and ways to meet them."
Discussing end-of-life care may not be easy for everyone, but approaching it with open conversations and planning, just as you would for any other significant life event, can help alleviate anxiety.
In essence, an end-of-life doula is a knowledgeable, experienced companion who provides compassion and isn't afraid to broach difficult subjects. Let me provide support to you and your partner, family, or friend through Mullein & Myrrh. With warmth, compassion, expertise, patience, curiosity, and attentive listening, together we can create an environment and atmosphere that embraces this challenging yet beautiful journey.
